Lucy Calkins Phonics Instruction

As a kindergarten teacher at OLMCA, I was proficient in and implemented the Lucy Calkins phonics curriculum and assessments. I tried to create the best lessons for my students by finding Lucy Calkin’s “teaching point” and then adapting the lessons to best fit my students needs.
Using dry erase sleeves to practice writing CVC words.
Finding items that start with the /s/ sound.
Sorting the difference between lowercase b and d.
Sight word fly swatter!
Playing memory with sight words.
Sight word trees near the holidays!
An example of a Lucy Calkins anchor chart.
Our first "snap" words of the year!
Writing CVC words that start with digraphs in elkonin boxes.
What starts with the /n/ sound?
Sorting items by long and short O.
Learning the signs for each letter of the alphabet.
Learning S blends!
Creating our own digraph and blends chart.
Sorting items by ending sound.
Letter & Letter Sound Assessments
Pre-K & Kindergarten
To monitor my students’ progress,, I conducted quarterly assessments on each students acquisition of their letters and letter sounds. I would conduct these more frequently with students who needed more intervention.
